Person of Indian Origin (PIO).
In September, 2002 the Indian Government launched Person of Indian Origin Card that allows visa free entry in India for Indian origin people living across the world. It also promises to give almost all the rights that are enjoyed by Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) including the purchase of non-agricultural land.
Validity: 15 years from the date of issue.
Eligibility
A foreign national, who was eligible to become citizen of India on 26.01.1950 or was a citizen of India on or at any time after 26.01.1950 or belonged to a territory that became part of India after 15.08.1947 and his/her children and grand children, provided his/her country of citizenship allows dual citizenship in some form or other under the local laws, is eligible for registration as an PIO Card. Minor children of such persons are also eligible for PIO. However, if the applicant had ever been a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh, he/she will not be eligible for OCI.
Requirements
The following documents must be enclosed in each application:-
Evidence of self or parents or grandparents. These could be:
1. Copy of the Indian passport.
2. Copy of the domicile certificate issued by the Competent authority.
3. Copy of Birth certificate.
Special Note: The Domicile Certificate should have a title as “DOMICILE” and it should contain your Date & Place of Birth. Especially It should be Countersigned by Magistrate.
Other supporting documents
These include:-
1. A school certificate.
2. Land ownership certificate.
3. Voter ID.
4. License.
Note: These documents serve as a supporting proof of your origin. One cannot file his case on the basis of these documents. He should have to submit any of the above mentioned documents along with these supporting documents by which eligibility may be reasonably ascertained.
2. Proof of present citizenship.
3. A copy of valid visa (It should have a validity of at least Three Months).
4. Evidence of relationship as parent/grand parent, if their Indian origin is claimed as basis of grant of OCI.
Benefits to a PIO
Following benefits will accrue to a PIO:-
1. PIO card holder will not require a seperate VISA to visit India. The card is valid for 15 years.
2. In the event of continuous stay in India of the PIO card holder exceeding 180 days, he/she will have to get himself/herself registered within 30 days of the expiry of 180 days with the concerned Foreigners Regional Registration Officer/Foreigners Registration Officer. For minor no registration is required on any type of visa.
3. The PIO card holder doesn’t require a student VISA for undertaking studies in India and similarly no Employment VISA will be required for taking up employment in India.
4. The PIO card holder will enjoy parity with NRIs in respect of facility available to the latter in the economic, financial and education fields except in matters relating to acquisition of agriculture plantation/properties. However, no parity shall be allowed in the sphere of political rights.
